All the Chloé women either wore replicas of Karl Lagerfeld’s designs for the Maison or the original archival pieces in honor of this year’s exhibition, ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’
American actress Maude Apatow, American actress and filmmaker Olivia Wilde, British actress Vanessa Kirby and Creative Director Gabriela Hearst attend the 2023 Met Gala in New York in celebration of the exhibition ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’ – all wearing Chloé.
Hearst, Apatow and Wilde wore replicas or gowns inspired, respectively, by the ‘Aurelien’, ‘Bugatti’ and ‘Angkor’ dresses Karl Lagerfeld designed for the Maison in 1983 in honour of this year’s exhibition theme. All looks were created bespoke by the Chloé ateliers in Paris, using deadstock materials, in collaboration with the master embroiderer Maison Hurel, and under the creative direction of Gabriela Hearst especially for the occasion of the 2023 Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Benefit. Apatow also wore a bespoke clutch bag with a beaded motif inspired by her dress.
Kirby meanwhile wore the iconic ‘Brise’ dress Karl Lagerfeld designed for the Maison’s Autumn-Winter 1983-84 collection. From the front, the evening dress has a military slant with its double row of sparkling buttons on midnight blue fabric, while the back features a trompe l’oeil showerhead motif embroidered by Chaste.
The Chloé looks worn by Hearst, Apatow, Wilde and Kirby are a tribute to Lagerfeld's Chloé legacy, which spans four decades and saw him rise to become Creative Director of the Maison. The original versions are now on display as part of the ‘A Line of Beauty’ retrospective.
